If you don't want to receive notifications for a specific period of time, you can select which notifications you want to mute and for how long in the Notification Center.
Mute Notifications
Access the Notification Center by clicking the date and time in the menu bar in the upper right
On a notification you want muted, right-click it
Select one of the following
Mute for 1 hour
Mute for today
Turn Off
